We have frequently noticed honourable mention being made, at different times, in various parts of the Union, of the spirited exertions of our navy officers, in affording aid to vessels in distress: and in the instance of the ship Gentoo, (which got on shore in this harbour) we record with pleasure the characteristic alertness of the officers and men of the U. S. ship Java, under the command of Commodore Perry, for their timely assistance. Much praise is due to sailing-master Mull, in particular, and also to Captain Cahoone, of the Revenue Cutter, his officers and men.
The Java sent one hundred men on board, who took down her yards, top-masts, &c. and discharged about one hundred and fifty tons of her cargo into a small craft.
