LATEST FROM FRANCE.
New York, Sept. 16.
The ship Leonora, Capt. Urquhart, arrived
this morning from Havre, whence she sailed on
the 9th of August.
The various committees on the new Laws proposed by the ministry, were appointed on the 7th.
M. Thiers seems to have appeared somewhat
against the strength of the measures. Not
a whig of the left or the opposition was appointed
on either of committees.
Various rumors were in circulation respecting
the assassin, the most decided of which was that
he had made statements implicating the Duchess de
Berri.
The Cholera was on the decrease.
Public feeling was much excited in relation to
the proposed law.—the general feeling being strongly against them.
It appears that M. Thiers had shown some opposition to the exorbitant provisions of the law, relative to the press.
The private correspondence of the Journal
du Havre seems to think that he ought to resign.
The Parisian journals, whether of the Thiers
party or the stronger opposition, agree in condemning the law proposed by Ministers: even the
Constitutionnel reprobates the measure.
The Journal du Commerce expresses the opinion
formed from the conversations of the influential
deputies, that the law of the press would not pass
without very material alterations.
The following are the latest reports respecting
the cholera.
At Marseilles on the 1st, 83 deaths: 2d, 111.
Toulon 31st, 18 cases, 11 deaths; 1st, 14 cases
14 deaths.
Aix, 31st, 13 cases, 14 deaths, Arles 29th, 46
cases, 18 deaths.
