God Love You
Make The Mass
Your Very Own

By BISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN

Which would you prefer - a general audience with the Holy Father in company with 10,000 others or a private audience? Why, then, when it comes to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, do you merely ask to be "remembered" in Masses with thousands of others, instead of having a Mass read for your own personal intention. Never mistake the gold or glitter on a card, or its size, for the value of a Mass. If your parish priest cannot accept your request, send it to the Holy Father's Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Your Diocesan or National Director will arrange it with a missionary nearby or in Africa, Asia or Oceania who, in turn, will offer Mass for you personally. The poor priests who will offer the Mass for you are particularly powerful in their intercession because of their holiness and sacrifices. Let us hear from you.

said by every priest in every part of the world.

This is your title in justice because you are a member of the Mystical Body.

Any alms you give to anyone have merit as alms, and you are free to send them, but you already have the general remembrance in Masses independent of the alms for "remembrance."

TO MAKE THE MASS your own, why not have a Mass read for your personal intentions, for the same alms? Suppose you received a printed postcard from the President, saying: "You will be remembered on every mile of this 5,000 mile trip."

Would it please you as much as a personal letter? Our Lord, on the other hand, dealt with individuals. While the crowd was pressing Him on all sides, He turned and asked: "Who touched me?" He sought out the person from the mob. Our Lord told us that He "calls His sheep by name."

THERE MAY BE SOME value in circular letters, but who prefers them to personal notes? If you were sick in the hospital, which would you rather hear: "You will be remembered with the thousands of other sick in my Mass tomorrow" or "I will offer Mass tomorrow for you that you may incorporate your sufferings to the Passion of Christ represented in the Mass?"

In the same light, does not every bride and groom want a Nuptial Mass for the blessings of their married life? And when a mother or father dies, do you not want a Requiem Mass for her or his intentions, not just a general remembrance on All Souls Day?

WHEN, THEREFORE, YOU want to remember a friend, have a particular Mass said for his particular intention.
