Full Text

The New Judgeship.

The papers are beginning to give some attention to the Judicial election which is to be held early in August. The Rock Island Union, which is a machine paper of the strictest sect, advocates the calling of a Republican convention to nominate a candidate. Should that course be adopted, as it probably will as the district is overwhelmingly Republican in politics, a candidate will be selected more for his political standing than for his fitness for the office. A number of papers, however, are in favor of ignoring politics in the coming election by making the selection upon merit alone. We think this should be done--the interest of the people will be better served by such a course, and judicial offices should be separated from politics, so far as possible, -Kewanee Independent.
