Full Text

The Registry Law Iniquity.

The registry law passed by the last Legislature is an act intended to keep poor laboring men from voting. It does not in the least inconvenience a wealthy man whose habitation is permanently fixed, but a laboring man, especially in these hard times, who is compelled frequently to change his place of abode, to be within convenient distance of work, when he can get any to do, will be greatly embarrassed by the iniquitous enactment, and many who will be unable to take the oath prescribed in the law will be disfranchised altogether. It will be very difficult for a single man who is a laborer and obliged to change his boarding house with change of employer to produce proof to the registers of residence, which will entitle him to a certificate as a voter. The law is a crude and ill digested bundle of stupidity, but it will do the work it was intended for - keep hundreds of poor laborers from voting. - [Toledo Democrat.
