"We cannot perceive what there is in the Letter that should not make every citizen of the country, from the highest statesman to the lowest scavenger, spurn both the Letter and its author with scorn and contempt. The Letter displays, throughout, a haughty and domineering spirit,—impudently attempting to throw upon our government the consequence of the unprincipled faithlessness of the government of France. No one, we think, can read it with attention, without perceiving that it was framed for the express purpose of cajoling and cheating our government into the commission of some act that might furnish the French with some further miserable apology for evading the demands of justice, honor, and common honesty."
