Workers Urged To Buy Label Goods Held Best Guarantee Of Good Post-War Labor Conditions

Washington, D. C. (ILNS).—Asking labor for all-out support in the building and outfitting of assault vessels, Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal has declared APA's and AKA's the Navy's "most urgent need."

In order to meet current schedules, the Navy must receive nearly two APA's and AKA's every day for several months to come, starting immediately, Forrestal says. September completions were not up to expectations. This program has now been given top priority among all shipbuilding programs.

Lack of manpower is the principal cause of the current lag in the APA (attack troop transport) and AKA (attack cargo vessel) program—lack of manpower in the building and outfitting yards and also in the plants producing such vital components as ball bearings, electrical equipment, deck winches, pumps, davits and mechanical and electrical spare parts.

Certain of the transports and cargo
vessels used in the Mediterranean and
European invasions were converted to
serve as attack transports and attack
cargo vessels, but in all 1943 and 1944
European area operations LST's and
LCI(L)'s were the primary means of
transportation making possible the
success of those operations.

Although both LST's and LCI(L)'s
will be utilized in the Pacific, emphasis
must be shifted to the larger type
attack transport and attack cargo
vessels because of the greater distances
involved and the necessity of having
troops live aboard for weeks instead
of days.

The new APA's and AKA's incorpo-
rate all the evolutionary devices and
features developed from experience in
previous amphibious operations.
