From Lisbon we hear, that his Portuguese Majesty has issued an Ordinance, whereby he forbids the Bishops making or ordaining any Priest whatever without his special Leave and Licence; and also the Heads of religious Houses not to admit any more without such Licence, his Majesty being sensible of the Prejudice it does to Religion, as well as the State, to admit too many into holy Orders; and to disburthen the Country of other useless People, the Fleet for Maranham was to take 300 or 400 Families on Board, who are to make a new Settlement in that Country, and to be allowed a certain Quantity of Land, and all Utensils, for cultivating it.
