Full Text

A gentleman, recently from Bordeaux informs us, that he saw shipped on board the schooner Jefferson, Capt. Hail, bound to New-York, where she has since arrived, a Box, said to contain a curious and very valuable Cane, or Walking-Stick, presented by His Imperial Majesty Bonaparte to our Republican President Jefferson!!!! Would it not be well for Congress to make some enquiries relative to this Cane, or Walking-Stick, as the Constitution of the U. States prohibits the Officers of the General Government from accepting any present or douceur; whatever, from foreign Princes, Potentates or Emperors, without the consent and approbation of Congress. We merely suggest this hint, from the possibility, that this precious gift may be covertly sent to Washington and slipped into the President's House, without observation. From the high respect which these two illustrious Potentates have always manifested for the rights of man, it cannot be doubted that the devices on this imperial gift; are emblematical of the "enlightened governments" of France and America, the only remaining Republics on earth!!"
