12 o'clock, fired a shot at a man under the
following circumstances: He had just come
from the theater a short time before, and was
standing on C street, in front of the Sazerac
saloon, when a woman rushed out of the Na-
tional lager beer saloon, in a basement on
the opposite side of the street, closely pur-
sued by two men. The woman yelled mur-
der and came toward the Sazerac, where the
gentleman who fired the shot and a friend
were standing, as if for protection. Just be-
fore the woman got to where they were,
however, one of the men in pursuit
overtook her, and dealt her a blow that felled
her to the ground. As soon as the woman
fell, the men pursuing her took to their
heels. Upon this, the gentleman thinking
that the woman who fell was one of the wait-
er girls of the saloon, and believing her to
have been stabbed, drew his revolver and
fired at one of the men as he was running—
but it is thought the shot did not take effect.
Afterwards, when they came to lift the wo-
man from the ground, she was recognized as
Buffalo Joe, a well known character in Vir-
ginia. It does not appear that she was very
badly hurt.
