The new General Assembly met at
New Orleans on Monday last, with
nearly all the members present, and
both houses speedily organized. Hon.
R. N. Ogden of Orleans having re-
ceived the nomination of the Demo-
cratic caucus for Speaker of the
House was elected to that position by
a unanimous vote. The vote for Gov-
ernor and Lieutenant-Governor was
compiled Tuesday and on Wednesday
the inauguration of the new State offi-
cers took place at Odd Fellows' Hall,
the ceremony attracting a very large
audience.
Gov. Wiltz has an opportunity of ren-
dering himself popular and conferring a
lasting benefit to the people of Louisi-
ana. By appointing Gov. Nicholls to the
Supreme Bench he will bestow a worthy
compliment upon his immediate prede-
cessor and receive the applause and heart-
felt thanks of four-fifths of the voters
who elected him to his high and respon-
sible position.—Thibodaux Sentinel.
The Chief urged upon Gov. Kellogg
the appointment of Gen. Nicholls as a
Judge of the Supreme Court in 1876.
and we now heartily join our Thibo-
daux contemporary in offering a simi-
lar suggestion to Gov. Wiltz. Gen.
Nicholls possesses pre-eminent quali-
fications for this high judicial station,
and our new Governor could not sig-
nalize the commencement of his ad-
ministration by a more graceful or
worthy act than the appointment
recommended.
