Last Tuesday there was a hearing of the case of "libel" against the walking delegate in the City Court. Nothing was averred by the prosecution which would justify the charge, save that the Courier was an unfair and a traitorous sheet, as every union man believes. Alling, the rhetorical lawyer, operated his jaw battery, and emitted the following in the effort:
"But we will suppose that the union men of New Haven had a right to demand the work in the Courier office, and a right to boycott and injure the office if their demand was refused? Then we will suppose that the Courier dismissed its men and employed the union men. Would not the dismissed compositors have 'a right,' in turn, to demand the dismissal of the union men and that the non-union men should be hired? If their demand should not be complied with, would not they, also, have 'a right' to boycott and ruin the Courier, if they could?"
Why, certainly, Alling, the rats would have the same right to demand employment; yes, and to BOYCOTT THE "COURIER," and use their influence to regain possession of their jobs even at the risk of ousting the Unionists. And the proprietors of the Courier would have an unquestionable right to comply or refuse to comply, according as they saw fit. If the rats had sufficient influence to boycott effectually it would only indicate that we had a rat community, that's all. Of course they'd have the right, Alling; but what in thunder makes you get so excited over it? Weak case, eh?
