Full Text

Drummers—Drummers.—A good deal of excitement has been produced by the amusing articles on the "Drummers," heretofore published in this paper. Some innocents have taken exception to them, because, as they alleged, they were personal in their allusions. Every accurate description of society must touch off the qualities of individuals, but they were no more personal than the character of Will Honeycomb, and the beau-ideals in the days of the Spectator.—We have given full descriptions of New York drummers—can any body give us a vivid picture of the drummers of Philadelphia, Baltimore, Charleston, or New Orleans? We want nothing low, vulgar, or disreputable. Drummers are undoubtedly a class of gentlemen—perfect gentlemen—but perfect originals too. They are a species of locomotive mercantile brokers, much more recondite and original than those of Wall street. Let's do them justice.
