HAMPTON, Va. - During the academic year 1953-54 Hampton Institute will disburse $78,000 in scholarships and financial aid to worthy students.

This amount is double that distributed ten years ago, reported Collins H. Davis, Dean of Freshmen at Hampton and chairman of the scholarship committee.

"The demand for financial aid has increased greatly in the last three or four years", he said. "In spite of a considerable increase in the total fund, there is still not enough."

Scholarships for new students are awarded on the basis of competitive examinations given in testing centers set up by the college. The examination, about 3 hours long, tests the students general knowledge as well as his ability in language, mathematics and reading.

In the spring of this year 499 students competed for the Hampton Institute scholarships in 44 testing centers scattered over 28 states. The Testing Center locations ranged from New York to Mobile, Alabama, and from Salisbury, Maryland, to Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

The increased number of applications "makes the competition for Hampton Institute scholarships much keener," Dean Davis pointed out.

"The wider geographical spread is roughly the same as that for the student body," Dean Davis continued. "Hampton is not a regional college."

From the 499 competitors in the '53 tests, 99 new students were awarded scholarships at Hampton.

In addition to these scholarships for new students, the committee grants financial aid to continuing students "on the basis of need, satisfactory scholarship, and college citizenship," Mr. Davis explained.

Of the 99 to receive scholarships, the first three students to rank in the examinations are, in the order of their grades, students from Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire; E. E. Smith Hi School, Fayetteville, North Carolina; and Bates High School, Annapolis, Maryland.
