Wednesday arrived here Captain Gowen, in 30 Days from Martinico, by whom we learn, That on or about the 10th of March last, a Fleet of French Men of War, consisting of 8 Ships of the Line, and 6 Frigates, with 2000 Troops on board, put into the back Part of that Island; and an Officer was sent ashore with a Party, to enquire whether the English had landed and invested it; being informed that the whole Island had surrendered to his Britannick Majesty, they immediately came under sail, and proceeded to the Leeward; in their Passage they met an English Frigate, which escaped from them, after receiving considerable Damage from their Fire.

Upon Advice of the above Fleet, a Number of Ships of Admiral Rodney's Squadron sailed in pursuit of them; but it was thought could not come up with them.

'Tis said an English Frigate had taken a Merchantman richly laden, that had been under Convoy of the above Fleet.
