A PREGNANT POINT
Even Jim Hill tells important truths sometimes. In his speech before the National Farmers (?) congress he said:
I would like to see some action on the part of public men which would help to create a foreign market. Since the war I have watched carefully, but have been unable to find one line or one act on the part of congress or the general government that would tend to extend our market. Perhaps, if some of you will take it up, you may be able to find something of the kind. I cannot. I am not criticizing any one, but simply stating in a plain, emphatic way, that I have been unable to find any legislation which would aid in opening other markets or increasing the facilities for affording new markets for our products.
Mr. Hill has forgotten that, instead of passing laws to help the farmer, we trust to famine and pestilence and droughts and floods to give us a market. If millions will only continue to die in other parts of the world we may be able to live. Surely statesmanship ought to do better than this.
