Full Text
The difference between the action of our government and that of Great Britain—much as we are in the habit of comparing them—was never more strongly manifested than it has been by recent events. The British Ministry have before this time gone out of office in consequence of finding themselves in opposition to the will of the people; the American Ministry have resigned because they find themselves in opposition to the Executive, with four-fifths of the people with them. Our Cabinet is dissolved voluntarily rather than to act counter to the expressed opinions of the National representatives—the British Cabinet is involuntarily dissolved rather than act in accordance with the wishes of the National legislature. In both cases the popular will drives the Ministry out of office, but in our case the constitutional advisers of the Chief Magistrate leave their places with the people and against the President; while Lord Melbourne and Lord John Russell leave theirs with the good will of the Sovereign, and in consequence of the ill will of Parliament—N. Y. Courier.
