Accounts from the South-western frontier of this state advise, that the counties of Washington, Sullivan, and Green, in North-Carolina, have lately declared themselves independent of that state, and have chosen a Governour and other officers, under the authority of the new government: That Governor Martin had wrote to Brigadier-General Savez, to transmit to him an account of these proceedings, and their reasons for this conduct. That the General laid this letter before their new Assembly, who fully expressed their sentiments on the occasion; and declared, that the people of the Western Country found themselves taxed to support government, while they were deprived of all the blessings of it: that injustice was done them in taxing their land, which lay 200 miles from trade, equal to lands, of the same quality, on the sea-shore; the frequent murders committed by the indians on their frontiers had compelled them to fall upon some plan for defence; in consequence of which they had declared themselves an independent state, and pledged their honours, confirmed by a solemn oath, to support, maintain and defend the same: and that they hoped for the assistance and influence, in Congress, of North Carolina, for hastening their reception into the federal union.
