"Deo volens" "argumentum ad ignorantium."—Hurrah for Georgibus Pattisonbus! His latin is very plain and very easily understood by himself at least; but we apprehend that it's all Mohawk to a large majority of his readers who have, as he says, got such "solid political information!" Well, we pity George, we do indeed, for his "acts and deeds are constantly watched!" and we do not blame him for using a language which very few of this community understand. The "locum tenens" would merely suggest to his unacquainted friend, George, the propriety of using the plain language on every occasion. The word "lie" is shorter than "positive falsehood," or "not so," or "nothing can be further from the truth," and when a man is taken with a fit of "irascibility" we see no impropriety in using it, although it might be "most cordially regretted" afterwards! Latin, as well as the Mohawk lingo, should, we think, be spelled right so as to make it sound right—"v-o-l-e-n-s" should be spelled 'v-o-l-e-n-t-e,' and "a-r-g-u-m-e-n-t-u-m a-d i-g-n-o-r-a-n-t-i-u-m" should be spelled "a-r-g-u-m-e-n-t-u-m a-d i-g-n-o-r-a-n-t-i-a-m." The meaning of the above latin is, that "God willing" Georgibus is very ignorant of the truth—so says our latin dictionary of quotations, which we were compelled to buy in order that we might decipher the Jeffersonian.
