Northern "Elections"
This morning we had ocular proof of the Radical carpet-bag rascality practised in what are facetiously termed the Southern "elections." as held under the invigorating and inspiriting presence of General Grant's bayonets.
Two boxes were made (for the recent Florida election,) under the direction of Mr. G. Morgan, President of the Board of Registration, by Robert Williams, a carpenter of Leon county.
The boxes show how the Radicals carried the election. We have before us the exact counterpart, made by the manufacturer of the original. The exactness of the imitation is duly verified by oath. It was brought this morning to the Express office by J. B. Nelson, of Georgia. The box could be opened anywhere simply by removing a few screws. but to obviate that necessity, the bottom is so constructed so that a portion of it could be removed at will, and in a moment, and any alteration wanted in the tickets made almost instantaneously and without much chance of detection even if the parties to be cheated were looking on. The thing is as simple as lying. A part of the bottom, say two inches in width, slides out far enough to allow any of the contents to be surreptitiously slipped out, and next little parcels of the "right" tickets slipped in.
And, says the Chicago Platform, "Congressional reconstruction is a success."
