Water Meters Under Discussion.

The Committee on Water Works and his Honor, Mayor Schell, had a prolonged discussion relative to the water meter system for use in the city.

Councilman Rice has at all times insisted that the city secure meters and use them at various points about the city on the several industries in order to definitely determine the amount of water used for a given period and then make the charges for the year to that concern accordingly.

He claims that by this the city will know what to charge for water consumed, and the users of water will be satisfied that they are receiving their money's worth.

It is said the Mayor and Aldermen feel that more revenue should be derived from the water system. It is said that they also feel that the rate charged for the use of water in private residences is as high as it should be, and that any increase in the water rents must be made upon the industries and those using larger quantities of water. This will include the hotels, factories, railroads, livery stables and in fact all places in which more water is used than in residences.

The majority of the members of the committee do not look on the meter system with favor, at the same time they are unable to form a basis for a proper and equitable increase in water rents.

The committee adjourned without coming to any conclusion as to what course to pursue to increase the income of the water system.
