INFORMATION DESIRED CONCERNING OTHER DEAD SOLDIERS

First Local Man in Service to Die After War Began Was Willie Cuspard

The following is a partial list of the Chatham county Negroes who lost their lives in the European war. The list was furnished, in part, by the Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross Society, and contains not only the names of the men who made the supreme sacrifice for their country, but it also gives their nearest of kin. There are twenty-five names listed. the first of them. Willie Cuspard, being the first Chatham county man to die in the service in France after this country declared war against Germany. He was in a stevedore regiment and died from pneumonia.

The following is the list of those who died in the service and their nearest of kin:

Chas. H. Green, died at Schenectady N. Y. (Wife, Mary G. Green, 506 Gwinnett, east.)

Robbie Steele. died of wounds in France (Mother. Rosa Steele. R. F. D. 3, box 373.)

Chas. Henry Shavers, died of disease in France (Wife, Nellie Pearl Shavers, 907 West Boundary.)

Isaac Gillison. died in France . (Father. Dick Gillison. Thunderbolt)

Clarence Powell. died of disease (Wife. Geneva Powell, 574 W. Bay)

Remus Bacon. Co. E., 36Sth Infantry. died in France (Mother. Emma Bacon, R. F. D. 1. box 35.)

Richard Northern, Co. B., 514. Engineers (Wife. Victoria Northern. 551 Williams street.)

Joseph Bembry. died at hospital from gas attack in France (714 Gwinnett street. west.)

James Sylvester Stephens, died en route to Camp Gordon from Pennsylvania from effect of being gassed while in France (Mother. Effie Green. 315 Huntington street, west.)

George Barclay, died in France (Wife. Georgia Barclay, 2005 Harden street.)

James Bailey. died in hospital in North Carolina from being gassed in France (Mother. Mrs. Mamie Williams. 536 Maple lane.)

Vance Allison. killed in action in France (Mother's address. 509 Academy street. Lawrence. S. C.)

Neptoin Bobin. died of wounds in . France (Wife. Annie Bobin. 715 Oglethorpe avenue. east.)

There were several other men from this county who lost their lives in the service. among them being Jim Scott Nemiah Scott. Willie Arnold and Solomon Brown.
