A library, devoted to serving labor in the fight against discrimination and bigotry, was dedicated by AFL-CIO President George Meany at the Atran Center, New York, national headquarters of the Jewish Labor Committee.
Paying tribute to William Green, President of the AF of L from 1924 to 1952, Meany said: "In dedicating this memorial to William Green, I do so with fond memories of his contribution to human relations, his contribution to human freedom, his contribution to human decency and also in contemplation of the contribution that has been made, we must still move forward in the fight for equality."
"They say eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," continued Meany. "I say that eternal and constant action is the price that we must pay for human liberty and civil rights for America."
"It may be a long time before the majority of the people in the South accept the idea of desegregated schools, before they abandon Jim Crow. It may be a long time before racial and religious minorities are fully and completely accepted in our communities. But until that time comes, the work is before us."
