"WANTED- An OFFICER."
Under the above heading I observed, in your issue of this day's date, an article intimating that the city is at a loss for a commander of the battery recently forwarded hereby the Governor. If such is the fact, allow me to mention the name of Isaac Chancery Brown as one well qualified for that or any other military position.
Mr. Brown first saw service in Florida, when quite young. During the war with Mexico he entered the service as a Lieutenant in the First Pennsylvania Volunteers; was at the siege of Vera Cruz, and the battle of Cerro Gordo: after which, the regiment being stationed at the Castle of Perote, he was, upon application of Captain Taylor, transferred to Company A, Third Regiment United States Artillery, and was with "Taylor's Battery" at the battles of Huamantla and Atlixco, under General Lane. After returning to Perote he was left in command of the company and the artillery of that post.
Mr. Brown is the son of the late Commodore Thomas Brown, U. S. N., and is the only male survivor of the family, both of his brothers having lost their lives in the public service-one in the navy, the other in the army. He has been a resident of this city or the surrounding neighborhood for the last eight years.
