MARTIN'S FERRY

Father Hartnedy, of Steubenville, and Father McNinneman, of Benwood, who have been assisting Father Mattingly, of this city, during the Forty Hours of Devotion here, have returned to their homes.

A great many of our people will attend the L. A. W. meet on the Island next week. Some of our riders are talking of entering for some of the prizes.

A party was given at the home of Mrs. Matthew Bader, on Second street, last evening in honor of her sister, Miss Maggie Donovan, of Pittsburg.

Misses Annie and Grace Pope, of Woodsfield, O., are the guests of the family of Wm. Dixon, of the First ward.

The Y. M. C. A. foot ball team have organized and elected officers and will immediately order their uniform.

Several of our people will take advantage of the cheap rates on the different roads to Chicago to-day.

The School Board had a special meeting last night in reference to the sale of the school bonds.

Wm. Otto, the glassmaker, of the Buckeye glass works, resigned his position yesterday.

Leroy C. Sedgwick attended the opening of the Republican campaign at Akron yesterday.

Miss Carrie Hobbs left yesterday for Baltimore, where she will spend the winter.

Joe Henderson, of Pennsylvania, is the guest of relatives here for a few days.

Mrs. Cope, of Smithfield, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. John Henderson.

C. H. Steele, of Steubenville, was calling on the drug trade yesterday.

Miss Jennie Dixon arrived home from the World's Fair last evening.

Rev. J. S. Winters stopped off yesterday on his way to Conference.

Miss Ida Hoyle left last evening for Chicago over the B. & O.

Council was called to meet in special session last night.

Chas. Swartz has returned from Anderson, Ind.

Paul Morrison will leave to-day for New York.
