Full Text

LITERARY.

[For the Liberator.]

Land of the South, of whips and chains
Of luxury and dissipation,
Of boasters and hot-headed brains,
Of tyrants and amalgamation!
Where sages meet to discompose,
Blot out, erase offensive pages,
And brag of their contempt of those
Who pay the laborer his wages.
Where robbers of the mail exult,
The laws and constitution spurning,
To gag the North, and claim the right
Of lynching, stabbing, hanging, burning.
And this is Chivalry, to hunt
The negro with the trained hound!
What Chivalry was ever found
To scourge the suppliant captive bound!
Ye Champions of oppression! brave
Knights of the Slave-trade, take your places
In Congress-Hall to roar and rave,—
There ye may still insult dough-faces.
