Between nine and ten o'clock on Tuesday evening, a house belonging to Dr. Broadhurst, the corner of Washington and Chamber-streets, was discovered to be on fire. The flames had made considerable progress before the alarm was given: but were happily extinguished, by the activity of the firemen, before any material damage was sustained. The house was unoccupied.
Immediately on the alarm being given a number of citizens ran to the building and broke into the back yard for the greater convenience of extinguishing the flames: when out bolted a suspicious looking man vociferating "fire! fire!" He was pursued; but mixing with the crowd, he was lost in the general confusion and has not yet been discovered. This circumstance has excited strong suspicion that the fire was not accidental.
