Colored Temperance Meeting.—The Asbury Temperance Society met in Asbury Church last evening. The meeting was opened by singing the well-known hymn, 'There is a land of pure delight,' &c. A prayer was offered by Mr. Henry Brooks, which was responded to with great earnestness from all parts of the house. The minutes of last meeting were then read by the recording secretary, Mr. Henry Brooks. The president, Mr. Edward Gantt, arose to state the object of the present gathering to be the election of officers and managers for the incoming year. He hoped they would select steady and energetic men. Temperance, he said, was the foundation of all good characters and results in the world. This was something men could not destroy in those who were upright and resolute.

A motion was made and seconded, that the present board of managers be continued in office for the ensuing year; objected to by some member on the ground of a quorum not being in attendance. Mr. Henry Brooks said they were here, and it was more the shame for those who had absented themselves. This meeting had been announced on Sunday to a large congregation, who could offer no excuse for their absence. The work must go on, whether the others took part or not: and if the machine ran over those who stood in the way, that was their own fault and concern; there was no time to wait.

Mr. Hutchinson desired to know what the constitution contained on the subject of elections, and the secretary read the clause. Mr. Hutchinson said he did not yet clearly perceive how it was constitutional to elect without a quorum. They were in no hurry, and could call another meeting, and by so doing they would not fail in their duty to those who were absent, by disobeying their own rules. The president decided to take the sense of the meeting on the question; for, he said, if they went on calling meetings, it would be of no avail, and the officers would be continued without any change forever.

Mr. T. Brooks asked, for the purpose of ascertaining if a quorum were really present, the secretary to read the roll of the members; but that officer objected to the request, as of no consequence, because all had been duly notified to attend, and the business of the society could not be put off if they did not so do. The question was then put to elect new officers and re-nominate the present board of managers; which was unanimously lost.

The president said that, as it appeared no election could be held that night, they had better adjourn, to meet at some time to be designated hereafter. He had come to the meeting in expectation of being relieved from his office and some one more worthy being appointed in his stead. He hoped, however, they would come better prepared at the next meeting to elect officers. The meeting was then closed by singing, and the benediction.
