SIX THOUSAND LAW SUITS

During the course of debate in the New York House of Assembly on Friday, concerning the organization of the courts under the new constitution, one of the speakers (Mr. Balcom) stated that there were one thousand causes ready for trial last January in the Court of Chancery; that probably a few hundred would be decided next term, and that there would probably be four thousand cases on the next calendar. It was also said that there were at least fifteen hundred to two thousand causes yet to be decided in the Supreme Court. This then is to be the beginning of the new legal machinery, with the aid of the old-the Appeal Court of eight overloaded with the work of ten courts to commence with, and an ocean of appeals thereafter.
