PROBE OF THEATER
VENTILATION HERE
Alderman Asserts Numerous Complaints Cause of Bill Introduced Monday.
If the common council adopts a resolution offered late Monday by Ald. William Baumann, Socialist, Health Commissioner G. C. Ruhland will promote an investigation of all Milwaukee theaters and motion picture houses to determine if they are properly ventilated.
The measure was sent to the public welfare committee, which will conduct a hearing. Ald. Baumann asserted the resolution was provoked by numerous complaints he has received that some theaters are decidedly lacking in ventilation.
"From the standpoint of the health of the thousands of Milwaukeeans who regularly go to theaters and moving picture houses, this matter is of much importance at this time," said Ald. Baumann. Medical authorities in numerous cities have declared there is grave danger of a recurrence of the Spanish influenza epidemic which swept the country last winter and took the lives of thousands of persons.
"Although I am not a physician, I believe I am correct in assuming that the germs of influenza would thrive famously in stuffy, poorly ventilated theaters, which are usually crowded to capacity at the night shows."
