Over 500,000 Lbs. Leaf Sold For $29.08 Price In Henderson On Monday

Record for Season and Highest Since 1934 Crop Scored in Offerings on Local Floors

MARKET IS BLOCKED FOR THE THIRD DAY

Buyers Pay Out $146,287.62 for Weed Monday, With Growers Greatly Pleased at Averages Made; Henderson Continues One of State's Highest Markets

More than half a million pounds of tobacco sold here Monday for approximately 30 cents a pound for the highest average for any day this season or since the high peaks of the 1934 auction year, and growers were highly pleased with the prices paid them.

J. R. McDuffie, sales supervisor, announced the official figures as being 503,001 pounds, bringing $146,287.72 for an average of $29.08 per hundred.

While offerings on the floors were not entirely cleared, and will not be today, Mr. McDuffie said there would be ample floor space for all offerings brought in by growers tomorrow. The local market continues to be one of the highest anywhere in the State, and is drawing tobacco from great distances because of the high prices being paid.

Monday's sales and prices lifted the local market close to the 4,000,000-pound figure for the season to date and an average well up toward the 27-cent level. Good tobacco is selling at a premium, and the quality in general is well over that for last year in this territory.

Two sets of buyers are working at fast paces daily to furnish accommodations to the farmers in handling their offerings as rapidly as possible, and growers are so well pleased with the service and the prices obtained here that they are bringing their weed in on additional sales on the Henderson floors.
