Full Text

The Annexation feeling in Canada,

Some idea may be given of the extent to which this excitement has been carried by the statement of the fact, that within one month, nine journals have openly declared for the "Manifesto," and are now defending annexation. They are the Courier, Herald, L'Avenir, Moniteur at Montreal; Argus, Kingston; Independent, Quebec; Independent and Mirror, Toronto; Gazette, Sherbrooke. Besides these, there are perhaps not less than a score that give annexation articles a place in their columns, do not oppose it, and many of whom will, doubtless, soon declare themselves in favor of the measure. Such a sudden, such an astonishing change, was never witnessed among the public journals of Canada since the first white man first put his foot upon the banks of the St. Lawrence.
