Full Text

KASKASKIA, OCT. 30.

During a number of days past, the extensive prairies in the neighborhood of this place, which annually produce a most luxuriant crop of grass, and which is now become ignitable, have been burning to an alarming extent. The fire spreads with a rapidity truly surprising; carrying consternation in every direction. Much fencing has been destroyed, and we are informed, considerable quantities of corn and other produce, which remained in the fields, and some houses endangered. An interminable cloud of smoke hangs over the face of the country, of such density as almost to intercept the sun-beams, and to produce a continued twilight. The first copious fall of rain, accompanied with a strong wind, will doubtless extinguish the fire, and disperse the smoke.
