Full Text

It may be that, in the matter of the Hilton libel suit, the New York World sinned. That remarkable journal isn't always as cautious in its comments as prudent newspapers are apt to be. Yet the country will not be impressed with the spectacle which old Hilton presents when he jumps into the ring as the particular champion of any member of the Stewart family. He managed to get the merchant prince's estate in a place where it would do Hilton the most good, he fought a lot of heirs to a finish, and the upshot is that, if account be taken of the resources this immensely rich but childless merchant had at his disposal, Mr. Stewart's life was quite as marked a failure as that of the late Judge Davis proves to be.

In the Hilton libel suit, the New York World may have sinned due to lack of caution. Hilton, championing a Stewart family member, managed Mr. Stewart's estate to his own benefit, fought heirs, and despite Stewart's immense resources as a childless merchant prince, his life was a failure like Judge Davis's.
