Full Text

June 13. Between Eleven and Twelve on Monday Night a Foreigner was accosted in the Strand, near the Savoy, by a Streetwalker, who pulled him by the Arm, which obliged him to push her down to get rid of her. She immediately called out Murder and Thieves, which alarming the Watch, the Gentleman thought it most prudent to take to his Heels; but before he had got many Yards, he was knocked down by a Fellow genteely drest, who took his Handkerchief out of his Pocket, and pretended to the Mob that he had just robbed the Woman of it; upon which he was charged by the Watch, and carried to the Roundhouse. The next Morning he was carried before a Magistrate, where the Prosecutor was to meet him, but his not appearing, and the Gentleman's Behaviour convincing the Justice he had been robbed himself and vilely used, he was discharged. In the Scuffle he lost his Snuff-Box, two Moidores, and a Silk Handkerchief. As he came out of the Justice's, he observed the Woman, who was the Occasion of all this, standing in the Street, upon which he charged a Constable with her, and she was committed to Bridewell, as an idle and disorderly Person.
