No Place For Politics
A strong effort is being made in certain quarters of this state to play politics in the selection of a speaker of the house at the approaching session of the legislature. It is well known that the candidacy of George Cole of Manhattan is being strongly considered and appearances indicate that Cole will be victorious. Humboldt and Esmeralda counties also have candidates while Washoe county is never without an aspirant for such honors. In comparing the qualifications of the various aspirants Cole stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Considerable thought should be given in electing a speaker, for it is this official who is responsible for the progress made during the session. A good speaker can keep the bill file cleaned of measures while a poor speaker can be responsible for slow action and with such an official in the chair a few days only are required before several hundred measures are on the file awaiting final action.
Cole is thoroughly conversant with the duties of the speaker. He served as a member of the legislature six years ago. Four years ago he was chief clerk in the assembly where he gained additional knowledge as to parliamentary proceedings. He can be depended upon to be fair and just in his rulings, leaving the debating to be done by the members on the floor, and at all times can be found conducting the business with despatch. It is such an official that prevents a jam of business during the last month of the session, and if the legislators from the various parts of the state are sincere in their serving for the best interests of all concerned, they will carefully consider the candidacy of Cole before casting their votes for the election of a speaker.
It has been argued, especially in the counties that have candidates for the speakership, that Nye county has long been fortunate in securing recognition.
Along this line it is pointed out that a number of state and national officers have been elected from Nye.
This argument is entirely without weight, for it shows nothing more than a desire to play politics. Political moves should be relegated to the background and the only matter considered should be the qualifications of the various candidates. Cole has the qualifications and his election to the speaker's chair will save this state several thousand dollars in time that would be thrown away with an incapable person presiding over the lower house.
