No effort is being spared to afford an impressive success to the 68th Annual Convention, Knights of Pythias, to be held in East Hartford, October 19-20.
Latest reports from the various committees in charge of this celebration report feverish activities on their part to give the more than two thousand delegates, visiting Knights and Pythian Sisters as adequate a reception as ever given them by communities far bigger than East Hartford.
East Hartford, as usual, is fortunate to be represented in affairs of such magnitude.
This convention, which is scheduled to be second only to the sesquicentennial in the matter of activities and number of people, is due to the fact that Phillip W. Merriman, of East Hartford, is the present Grand Chancellor, Knights of Pythias. After going through the Grand Chairs of the lodge for five years, he finally brought home the rare distinction for any one man in this organization, by being elected to the Grand Chancellorship. This subsequently brings the State Annual Grand Convention to the home town of the elected. From this community and by this convention the next grand Chancellor will be chosen to rule over the destinies of the Grand Lodge for the next year.
The convention will devote itself to a large number of business in its various forms, with banquets, luncheons, entertainments, and dancing as climax.
Badges bearing the resemblance of the present Grand Chancellor have been ordered, according to reports of the Badge Committee. An abundance of electric lights and other lighting will be placed on all buildings to be occupied for the occasion, by Decoration Committee-man Hyman Namerow, head of an electrical concern in town, in co-operation with other members of the local lodge. Arthur Beers, another member of the Decoration Committee, has been active in procuring parking space for the incoming Knights. To date a number of gasoline station owners and others have offered space free of charge. While flags will be displayed throughout the city, N. Lymber, chairman of the Decoration Committee reports that there will be an abundance of welcome, directional, and other signs placed conspicuously at various parts of the town, and he also expects to see quite a number of cars bearing welcome slogans and greetings.
The entertainment committee reports that it has procured the services of a large number of first-grade local and outside talent for the amusement of the visiting brothers and Pythian Sisters, while the reception committee is drawing plans to give full credit to East Hartford cordiality.
A large number of local and Hartford merchants have shown a keen interest, by providing souvenirs, and the response to advertising program has passed all expectation.
A tremendous amount of business is to be derived from such a big gathering and merchants of this town are advised to help make this affair as interesting as possible.
