The Universe Watches Us
THERE CAN BE nothing but agreement with Dr. Ira De A. Reid, noted sociologist and anthropologist, who declared to a Chicago audience that the greatest thing facing Americans in this "Decade for Decision" is the need to inaugurate programs for the peaceful use of social energy and the curtailment of human wastage of our time.
Said Dr. Reid, former Atlanta University professor presently after explaining that human wastage was a result of discriminatory practices in employment and other American bias due to race and color:
"We waste the talents of individuals in this manner and we waste government funds when we give relief payments and social services that these individuals might otherwise provide for themselves, were it not for discrimination."
AS THIS CORNER has long pointed out, America is wasting so much of itself that Russia may find us easy victims of destruction, if we do not mend our ways.
We say that we do not want things regimented in America, as is reportedly the case in Russia, but we admit, on the other hand, that they are producing more scientists and erasing illiteracy and ignorance at a faster pace than the United States. There must be a reason. The greatest suspicion is that it is due to our continuous waste of human talent, due to color and race.
MUST THIS CIVILIZATION die because of such shortsightedness?
This is the soul-searching question which must face all Americans, regardless of race. It seems highly ridiculous that with plenty of manpower, raw materials, industry and resolve, there is any possibility that our American culture stands threatened by blind disregard of the simple tenet of brotherhood of man.
THERE IS YET time for the South to awaken to its potentialities of leadership of not only the nation, but the world.
This is the great crucible of races and American citizens from every clime. This is the place for decision in the United States, for upon it rests the entire future of our foreign relations. The whole world is watching us, whether we are standing or sitting!
