HAS GIVEN FREEDOM
Baroness Uriu, Who Graduated From
Vassar, Tells of Progress Made
by Japanese Women.
POUGHKEEPSIE, N. Y., June 10.
"Japan admires everything American,
girls and ideals," said Baroness Uriu,
as she left Vassar college where she
graduated in 1880, and where she was
the guest of honor. "You have ad-
vanced 30 years in America since I
left this country, and yet we in our
country have advanced many more
years.
The little Japanese lady was liber-
al in her praise of American women
and women's colleges.
"The higher education of America
has given Japanese women social free-
dom," she said, "for the married lady
in my country today has as much free-
dom as anywhere else in the world.
Today we please our husbands by
wearing western dress, by accepting
American ideas."
Before Admiral Uriu and his wife
left for West Point, the baroness pres-
ented to the college a large silver
bowl, decorated in enamel and ham-
mered relief work. The bowl was giv-
en to the baroness by the Emperor of
Japan as a token of his esteem and
when the emperor heard that the bar-
oness was to visit the United States
he caused word to be sent to her that
she might give the bowl to her college
if she wanted to.
