Full Text

The Kansas state text-book commission at Topeka has completed its work of adopting text-books to be used in the public schools of Kansas for the next five years. Every school-book publishing concern in the United States put in a bid for the books and was represented by an agent during the session. Concerns were very slow to bid to supply books in 1897 on account of the low prices fixed by the law, but they were all on hand to bid this time, even though the prices were the same as five years ago. The following shows the books adopted the prices to the local agents and the concerns which captured the contracts:

First reader, 10 cents, American Book company.

Third reader, 23 cents, American Book company.

Fourth reader, 30 cents, American Book company.

Fifth reader, 40 cents, American Book company.

Writing, 5 cents, Crane & Co., Topeka.

Speller, 10 cents, Rand, McNally & Co., Chicago.

Mental arithmetic, 20 cents, Ginn & Co., Chicago.

Elementary arithmetic, 25 cents, Scott, Foresman & Co., Chicago.

Advanced arithmetic, 35 cents. Scott, Foresman & Co., Chicago.

Elementary geography, 30 cents, American Book company.

Advanced geography, 75 cents, American Book company.

Elementary grammar, 20 cents. American Book company.

Advanced grammar, 34 cents, Crane & Co., Topeka.

United States history, 50 cents, Scott, Foresman & Co., Chicago.

Physical geography, 80 cents, Ginn & Co., Chicago.

Algebra, 50 cents, Ginn & Co., Chicago.

Physiology, 50 cents, American Book company.

Physics, Allyn & Bacon Chicago.

Bookkeeping, 40 cents, Goodyear & Marshall, Cedar Rapids, Ia.

The books are sold to the pupils at ten per cent. above the price to the agent. All the books now in use must be taken in at half the price of new books.
