Full Text

The explanations and qualifications made by Butler to take off the edge of his Wednesday's insolence, remind one of that early legislative experience of his,—his quarrel with Speaker Bliss of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, many years ago. The occasion of his rage then was a decision of the chair, and in the first transport of his fury he expressed a wish to 'knife the old cuss,' as he elegantly expressed it. Being called to account for such language, he declared that he only wanted to 'knife the speaker's decision,' which is a very harmless if not very intelligible amusement.
