Literary Cadet And Rhode Island Statesman

It is stated on authority of letters received at Baltimore from Valparaiso, that Samuel Larned, Esq. has been appointed Charge d'Affaires to the Republic of Chili, Herman Allen, Esq. having been recalled.

Mr. Larned is a native of this town, descended from a very respectable family; and has risen in the world by the force of his own genius, and has not been indebted to any one for his good fortune. He was educated a Merchant, and for many years resided in Cadiz where he did an extensive business; but a reverse of fortune overtook him, and he returned to his native country. With a mind naturally bent towards literary pursuits, during the interesting period of his mercantile life, he devoted much of his time to literary studies; and succeeded in acquiring, through his own individual exertions, an accomplished education, which has pre-eminently fitted him for the responsible office he now holds.

We are by no means disposed to flatter the pride or pamper the vanity of any one, and in thus speaking of Mr. Larned, we are impelled, by the great respect we entertain for an accomplished and meritorious gentleman; who for overcoming the numerous embarrassments of life, and securing the confidence of his country, is entitled to the commendation and applause of all who know him. We must be permitted, to wish him much happiness and good health, whilst residing at Chili, and, when he shall have fully discharged his duties, a happy return to his native country, and the bosom of his family.
