Paul Williams, wanted as the trigger man in the murder plot that resulted in the mistaken-identity shooting early Wednesday of Gus Standish continued to elude police capture late last night.
Standish, 47 year old garage nightwatchman, who was wounded in the right hand and chest, showed light improvement at Grady Hospital, although his condition was still considered by surgeons to be serious.
Young Williams who lives at 131-2 Fulton street, southeast eluded police capture Thursday after outwitting officers Wednesday night. Several calls were received at police headquarters as to his whereabouts but all proved to be false.
Standish was shot when he is believed to have been mistaken for J. C. Rainey, rival for the affection of Susie Pless. Young Williams' comely sweetheart.
The nightwatchman was sitting in front of the garage at 173 Houston street, smoking a pipe, when an automobile drove up, and an occupant without warning, opened fire and Standish, following an all-day investigation Wednesday secured signed statements from several witnesses, one of whom was a passenger in the getaway car that Williams was the man who had done the shooting.
Williams is said to have made threats against the life of J. C. Rainey, better known as "Red," after severely beating Miss Pless. He accused the young woman with having dates with Rainey.
Williams is the son of Percy Williams well known Summerhill businessman.
