Of the Behring Sea Tribunal Causes Much Comment In Washington.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 16.-The dispatches from Paris announcing that a decision had been rendered by the Behring sea tribunal has caused much discussion and comment here among the officials of the state and treasury departments and in the senate and house.
Soon after the receipt at the state department Tuesday of Mr. Foster's dispatches word was sent to Secretary Carlisle, who has supervision over the seal islands in Behring sea, and a telegram was sent to the president at Gray Gables acquainting him with the substance of the decision.
The senate committee on foreign relations has expected the decision rendered, and few of the members were at all surprised. Senator Butler stated that he never believed that the contention of this government that the Behring sea was a closed sea could be maintained The sea, he said, was too large a body of water for such a claim to be exercised over, and stated that a decision against us on that point carried with it the other incorporated sections of articles
Senator Butler believes, however, that much will have been achieved if the co-operation of England is secured in the protection of seal life

Event Details
Dispatches from Paris announced the Behring Sea tribunal's decision, causing discussion in Washington among state and treasury officials and in Congress. The US contention that the Behring Sea is a closed sea was rejected by the tribunal. Senator Butler noted the sea's size made the claim untenable and that the decision affects related articles, but achieving English cooperation for seal life protection would be significant.
