The election which has just taken place in New York resulted in a signal triumph for the Whigs. It was gratifying as unexpected to us. After years of incessant toil and labor—after enduring defeat upon defeat with an energy that never wavered, and a perseverance that never flagged—the Whigs of New York have remained true to their principles, firm in their faith, and unchanged in their determination to rescue the Government from the hands of those who prostituted it to the advancement of their most selfish and unprincipled purposes. Confident in the purity of their cause and equally confident in the virtue and intelligence of the people, our friends have nobly struggled for the Constitution and the Laws, and a glorious and triumphant victory is their merited reward. The official details of this election are below. It is a result of which we feel proud and which must gladden every Whig in the Union. The Tammany hitherto triumphant in its majorities, is now in a minority of over seven thousand five hundred.
