But Romoser could Not Fix Guilt on Colored Girls.
One John Romoser made complaint to the police Friday evening that he had been robbed of fifty-two dollars by a couple of colored girls, between the McMillan grocery corner and the Royal Cafe. He was standing in a stairway in the block when the two colored women who give the names of Mamie Jones and Annie Woodson, approached him. One of the women bumped into him and rubbed against him, saying at the time: "You all's from Muchakinock, 'ain't you?" Romoser replied that he lived in Oskaloosa. The women tried to scrape up an acquaintance, but he says he turned and walked away. On the way home he thought of paying a bill and found that his money was missing. He immediately thought of the colored women and went after the police.
A warrant was issued by Justice Stanley and the women were soon found and arrested. Their apartments were searched but the money was not found. The trial of the women was conducted this morning before Stanley, but there being no direct evidence connecting them with the loss of the money, they were discharged and the case dismissed.
