Mrs Abbie Castrell spent the past Thanksgiving week in Los Angeles on fraternal business. Mrs Castrell grand teten- or the Chapter Service something Order & Eastern Star.

Mrs Marie Necea- is spending the holidays in Los Angeles visiting her sister Mrs Leah and niece returns. Mrs Necea- will stop in Oakland and also San Francisco when she will visit briefly with Mrs Ora Swarts.

Ernest Porter Jr Seattle is spending Christmas week with his grandparents Mr and Mrs something Porter. Ernest is the son of the late Ernest Porter.

are overjoyed that the first Ne-
gro to be appointed to the regu-
lar Police Force is of such high
calibre.

Negroes in Portland along with
all democracy loving citizens rec-
ognize this as a progressive step
in law enforcement which is long
overdue. We hope this move is
indicative of a police department
cover of complete fair play and
not a token appointment.

This appointment allows the
more important issue we need
the recent brutality and, effe-
ctive policing which has been in-
flicted upon the Negro community
by special officers who seem in
no way qualified to hold the posi-
tions to which they have been as-
signed by city officials. However since
this is a letter commending you
on the appointment of Charles
Duke, I will not dwell upon the
special police situation at this
time.
