"Who Pays for the Coals?"
Secretary of the Navy Robeson evidently
takes a very lively and particular interest
in the visit of King Kalakaua to the United
States. He it was who put a United
States vessel of war at the service of His
Hawaiian Majesty to bring him, at a reduced
rate of speed indeed, but without any
draught on the Hawaiian civil list, from
Honolulu to San Francisco. It is not
usual, we believe, for European potentates
to make long sea-journeys in vessels belonging
to other powers; and when the sover-
eigns of Europe extend this kind of cour-
tesy to their colleagues, even on the most
moderate scale, they use their private
yachts, and not the public vessels of the
state, for that purpose. We fear that
there would be some "tall talk" in the
British Parliament if the First Lord of the
Admiralty should send a British iron clad
to fetch over the King of Denmark on
visit to his daughter, the Princess of
Wales, or the Emperor of All the Russias
on a visit to his daughter, the Duchess of
Edinburgh. It would be curious to know
under what authority the Secretary of the
Navy performed this pretty little piece of
politeness to His Hawaiian Majesty.--N.Y. World.
