Swedish shipping and shipbuilding enjoyed an exceptionally good year in 1951. The gross earnings of the Swedish merchant marine are expected to reach the record total of 1,300 million kronor.
According to the latest quarterly statistics of the Shipbuilders' Council of America, Sweden remains the second nation in the world in regard to tonnage building and on order. The Swedish figure is 1.5 million gross tons, which means that the country's share in the world total is 11.5 per cent. At the end of 1951, Sweden's own merchant fleet aggregated about 2,290,000 tons, or nearly 200,000 tons more than the year before.
