Full Text

I'll Leave It to the Men.

Columbia Record, Wednesday: The officers of the First regiment who went to Trenton yesterday morning returned in the afternoon. They report that Senator Tillman said to them that he would do all in his power to have the regiment retained in the service, provided the men desired to stay in it; but otherwise he would do nothing. This means that the men will vote on the question; but should they decide that they want to stay in it by no means follows that they will. The whole outcome rests with the war department; but should Senator Tillman pull his 'rabbit foot' on the war department the regiment would likely be retained under the circumstances.
